Extensive estade of a several times decorated and wounded bavarian frontline officer. On February 20th 1887 he was born in Kissing in Oberbayern. At the beginning of the war Dr. Dipl. Ing. Muggenthaler was Offiziersstellvertreter and shortly after promoted Leutnant. As platoon-leader of an MG-platoon he served with his comrades from the beginning on at the front. When in the eavening of March 22nd the bataillon was advancing near Carency close to Arras Hauptmann Bösmüller and Lt. Muggenthaler where wounded by a mine explosion. Till the end of may he was not able to get back into service. In the spring of 1914 he took over the command of the 4. company and in April the 1. company and tried to save the life of an Artillery-NCO during a gas-attack at the Tilloy-position, when he gave him his second gas-mask-filter. But as the NCO already inhaled to much gas, he died the next day. For the heavy and bloody battle, that caused german success won by his MG-company at the Souville-nose on both sides of the Souville-gorge, Muggenthaler als leader was awarded on 13.9.1916 the Iron Cross 1. class. In the end of fall 1916 the regiment was removed from the western front and send to Romania. When the regiment was heavily attacked in Bulbucata on December 1st, he personally went with an heavy maschine gun from the Bataillons-reserve to the line of battle and secured the position. While heavy fighting arrose on December 31st in the northeast of Gemenile with russian trooops, Muggenthaler lead his troop under direct fire. While doing so, he got shoot in the head and removed from the frontline. Put for several days in an unheated church he was taken back on ox-carts and the railway via the field-hospital 128 in Bukarest to Germany. With him, the Bataillon lost one of his best officers. Even though he was not able to take any active part in the war anymore, he survived and was awarded in march 1918 with the bulgarian bravery order 4. class. After the war, he worked as a chemist and lived close to Stuttgart. Rare and interesting estade of an officer who is several times mentioned in the regimental history and even wrote part of it.
